2nd artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) day (#shareASM)
On 1 February, 2017, IIED invited stakeholders involved in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) to share their work in this sector and make connections across the world, using their own and IIED's online channels. Here's a round-up of the day's updates...
- The "digital day" was arranged by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), which is is convening dialogue processes on artisanal and small-scale mining in Ghana and Tanzania, and supporting GIZ in Madagascar.
- The aim of the day was to provide an open online space to share ideas for building a safer, more inclusive, sustainable and productive ASM sector.
- The day began with IIED sharing insights into its work on ASM, including a blog by Fitsum Weldegiorgis, the institute's lead researcher on ASM issues, exploring how ASM can make a positive contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Soon, from across the world came a variety of news and views from individuals and organisations keen to share their knowledge and find out more...

- IIED's #shareASM day was organised shortly before the opening of the world's largest mining investment conference, the Investing in African Mining Indaba, in Cape Town, South Africa, from 6-9 February. This annual event brings together more than 6,000 delegates, representing global mining companies, international investors, and African and non-African governments. IIED will be participating in a range of events, and also contributing to the 8th Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI2017), the parallel event set up by civil society organisations to provide African mining communities with a platform to voice their concerns and advocate for better governance in African mining.
- IIED's @fittwittar will be at #AMI2017. Find him there and #shareASM in person. https://twitter.com/AltMiningIndaba/status/826752543955021824 …
