CBA9 highlights: day four
Highlights from the fourth and final day of the 9th International Community-Based Adaptation Conference (CBA9) on measuring and enhancing effective adaptation to climate change, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 24-30 April 2015
- VIDEO: Before we start, though, here's @SaleemulHuq's latest video diary, rounding up yesterday's events --> https://youtu.be/jT8vX1_D2Nw #CBA9
- Throughout the week, the issues raised by the conference and field trips have inspired a series of articles in the media
- Great coverage by @leobarasi of #CBA9 in Nairobi this week - read all his reports in one place - http://www.rtcc.org/tag/cba9/ @IIED #climate
- This @TR_Foundation story on chickens & solar panels being bartered for tree planting came from a #CBA9 field trip - http://www.trust.org/item/20150429114132-tnby1/?source=jtDontmiss …
- First up on day four was a lively debate between two key figures at the conference, with very different views on who should lead monitoring and evaluation
- The 4th day of #CBA9 is starting with a debate between @Irish_Aid's Adrian Fitzgerald & Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies' Atiq Rahman
- Whose measurement counts? Give us your views on who monitoring & evaluation activities should ultimately be served #CBA9 #climatechange
- Because communities are affected by #climatechange the most they are in a position to know best which measurements matter, says Rahman #CBA9
- Communities in isolation can't address #climatechange alone, responds @Irish_Aid's Adrian Fitzgerald #CBA9
- Fitzgerald: "Everyone must be involved, but only government can provide scale and coordination to reach everyone" @Irish_Aid #CBA9
- Documenting and communicating results achieved to citizens will ensure the future of climate finance, says Fitzgerald @Irish_Aid #CBA9
- Fitzgerald replies: "If we start to think about whose measurement counts the most, there is a dilemma" #CBA9 https://twitter.com/IIED/status/593662839845322752 …
- .@Irish_Aid's Fitzgerald: "It's not about what matters most, it's about getting it right". It's a question of balance #CBA9
- The debate was moderated in his inimitable style by Pablo Suarez, of Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, and he went on to share the outcomes of the game-playing sessions he had run during the conference
- We've moved on to outcomes from #CBA9, and @RCClimate's Pablo Suarez is updating delegates on his game-playing sessions
- The first image reflects elements of M&E, the second image has a much greater focus on action #CBA9 @RCClimate
- Then it was time for individual groups to share their own outcomes with the wider conference
- Among those groups were Youth CBA, who held their own well-attended CBA conference in parallel with the main event
- Then it was time for the closing speeches
- If the Private Sector is going to engage in #CBA9 it cannot be on a profit motive alone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCmmGhIJszQ … must deliver on adaption
- With that, the conference closed, and a press release was issued containing the Nairobi Declaration, which was presented to Fatuma Mohammed Hussein to take to the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) in December
- .@SaleemulHuq: "Poorest & most vulnerable communities are disproportionately affected by #climatechange & this will continue... (1/2) #CBA9
- (2/2) "unless world's leaders make every effort to truly prioritise their needs in 2015's high-level summits." http://www.iied.org/global-leaders-must-not-neglect-worlds-poor-vulnerable … #CBA9
- The efforts of IIED senior fellow and ICCCAD director Saleemul Huq, the driving force behind the CBA conferences, were recognised with a presentation from the Maasai delegation
- The positive feedback immediately started to arrive...
- Kudos to organisers & participants at #CBA9 for providing a genuine #climatechange #adaptation learning experience. Thanks!
- And while there may be no more session, speeches or events, there is still plenty of interviews for both those who attended the conference, and those who didn't, to get as much as possible from the event
- #CBA9 may be over, but there is still plenty to see & learn, inc. a series of video interviews with sessions leads: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1iUHL94bWo4JTOHHBLzD0aOTq7_gfuuB …

- For all of us, the work doesn't end when the conference finishes. But some of us are just slower to leave...
- See you next year!
