IIED’s Communications Learning Programme (February 2014)
A series of sessions organised by the International Institute for Environment and Development from 24-28 February to explore common communications themes with partners in Kenya and Ethiopia, build relationships and learn from them about the challenges they face on a daily basis
- The week began on Monday morning with introductionsbetween participants and an opening from IIED Communications Director LizCarlile (far left of photo)
- On Monday afternoon, the group was visited by IIED Senior Fellow David Satterthwaite and researcher Abbi Buxton, who were given the opportunity to run through some speeches they were due to give the following week, and receive feedback
- There was a focus on interactive workshop sessions that addressed the real requirements and needs of the partner organisations
- Today, the focus is on writing skills, branding & tailoring products to audiences, with @shanahanmike and @RosGoodrich #CommsLearningWeek
- News of the sessions attracted the attention - and praise - from other non-governmental organisation professionals
- @swalker7147 Thanks Stephanie. We find it very rewarding, and as educational for us as for those the sessions have been designed
- It's day 3 of our #CommsLearningWeek @IIED and we're looking at marketing and digital communications with @clairgs and @mattjobob
- The week wasn’t solely centred on formal sessions – therewas also time for some socialising out of working hours
- The partner organisations involved in the sessions were also keen to communicate their value
- @ClimDevAfrica at @IIED to attend #CommsLearningWeek Great ideas on communications planning http://www.iied.org/communication
- Day 3 of #CommsLearningWeek included a session on how digital tools can enhance content, save time and effort, and communicate messages in different, potentially more interesting ways. (Update - January 2017: These tools included six-second Vine videos, but the service was later discontinued by Twitter)
- How valuable was #CommsLearningWeek? Don't take our word for it: here's the views of some of the participants themselves, starting with Aloysius Fomenky, Communication Officer for the African Climate Policy Centre
