Putting the local into climate finance
At a COP22 event to discuss 'From NDCs to National Climate Investment Plans: domestic investment and climate finance tracking', IIED's Marek Soanes introduced research on the case for subnational climate finance:
- Talking about domestic tracking of #climate finance @I4CE_ event on finance for #NDC's right now in EU Pavilion @COP22_NEWS @itcochran
- @JaneWilkinsonn of @climatepolicy says US$367 bn was flowing around the world in #climatefinance in 2013/14 #COP22
- .@JaneWilkinsonn presents lessons from @climatepolicy's #climatefinance tracking work in the Ivory Coast https://twitter.com/IIED/status/797029831946997760 …
- Over FCFA 173 bn per year alone is needed to meet Ivory Coast's objective to meet 20% of forest cover by 2030, says @JaneWilkinsonn #COP22
- Laruen McNicholl, from the OECD Research Collaborative, presented a case study on direct access to finance in South Africa, while Sandra Guzman, of Grupo de Financiamiento Climáticopara América Latina y el Caribe (GFLAC) offered a Latin America perspective
- .@san_lunag sharing @GrupoGFLAC's #climatefinance tracking work in Latin America & the importance of increasing stakeholder engagement https://twitter.com/ambienteysoc/status/797035775451860992 …
- The liveliness of the event was illustrated by the fact the slides being presented seemed to take on a life of their own, skipping forward and backward beyond the control of the presenters
- You could say it's a good argument for devolved control of slides to local presenters. More on #climatefinance parallels shortly... #COP22 https://twitter.com/IIED/status/797032071180992518 …
- With those problems resolved, IIED researcher Marek Soanes moved on to tackling the challenge of getting climate finance to the local level
- Even just implementing the LDCs' NDCs will require at least US$96 bn per year in international climate finance --> http://www.iied.org/indcs-least-developed-countries-are-estimated-cost-us937-billion-year …
- More evidence from community-focused initiatives that climate/development funds can deliver local finance --> http://www.iied.org/six-steps-local-climate-finance … #COP22
- A lively question-and-answer session followed, which included the highlighting of IIED's Tracking Adaptation and Monitoring Development project
- Now: How do we move towards #climatefinance planning, in terms of integration. Not what needs to be done, but how to do it? #COP22
- @JaneWilkinsonn: It's pretty much impossible at the moment to track [#climatefinance) from the national to local level #COP22
- @JaneWilkinsonn: Without knowing this we can’t measure how it impacts on the ground. It's a big gap in our current knowledge #COP22 https://twitter.com/IIED/status/797039121390833665 …
