D&C Days: day two

The 14th D&C Days event took place on 12-13 November 2016 at the UN climate talks in Morocco. It featured three programme streams to look at efforts to deliver the goals of the Paris Agreement, ways to ensure equitable decision-making on climate finance, and how to bridge the gap between climate and humanitarian development work

Day two started with the arrival of a high-profile guest

It's 14 years since Saleemul Huq, now a senior fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), founded D&C Days, and he started the second day of the conference by summing out day one and revealing a bold plan to re-invent COP itself

The challenges and issues posed by mobility and displacement were explored in the first session of the day, which forced participants to consider their emotions should they be affected

After the interactive elements, participants heard first hand experience from Fiji on how increasing population movement due to climate change is affecting her country

There was a surprise during the following session on how climate and development practitioners can benefit from the inspiration, skills, methods and mindsets developed by applied improvisation

During lunch, the Thomson Reuters Foundation took the opportunity to talk to former Irish president Mary Robinson about climate adaptation and, the big news of this year's UN climate talks, the election of Donald Trump as US President. Meanwhile, the collective communications staff continued to beaver away promoting key messages from D&C Days

The afternoon parallel sessions saw participants choose between a focus on forest fire prevention and improved ovens and boilers in Morocco; the synergies between Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and how to mobilise private sector finance for adaptation, which is the focus of the coverage below:

The closing panel, moderated by Mary Robinson, brought together the three strands of discussions over the two days, highlighting the key messages and actions required to ensure that global ambition translates into local action and delivers climate resilience for all.

As part of the session, Robinson asked participants to think about three key words that reflected what they had seen and heard during D&C Days. There was no shortage of willing respondents

The 2016 D&C Days closed with a moving poem by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, to her daughter
