D&C Days: day two
The second day of the 2016 Development & Climate (D&C) Days event at COP22 continued conversations on how the world can deliver on the ambition of last year's landmark Paris Agreement. The event had the theme 'Global ambition. Local action. Climate resilience for all'. Here's what happened:
- The 14th D&C Days event took place on 12-13 November 2016 at the UN climate talks in Morocco. It featured three programme streams to look at efforts to deliver the goals of the Paris Agreement, ways to ensure equitable decision-making on climate finance, and how to bridge the gap between climate and humanitarian development work
- Day two started with the arrival of a high-profile guest
- It's 14 years since Saleemul Huq, now a senior fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), founded D&C Days, and he started the second day of the conference by summing out day one and revealing a bold plan to re-invent COP itself
- @SaleemulHuq, who founded #DCdays, is giving the opening address on day two of the conference #COP22 https://twitter.com/IIED/status/797737246820421632 …
- At #DCdays @SaleemulHuq summarises day 1, highlights need to communicate climate solutions to the powerful - not just challenges & problems
- Day 2 at Development & Climate Days has started with a vision from @SaleemulHuq for a focus on action and an "inside out COP" #DCdays
- Learnings from @SaleemulHuq: beware the "information push trap".Don't carry out research without listening to local voices to guide #DCdays
- The challenges and issues posed by mobility and displacement were explored in the first session of the day, which forced participants to consider their emotions should they be affected
- Participants at #DCdays are playing a climate mobility game, emphasising the human reactions to environmental change and displacement https://twitter.com/SpinOnBike/status/797745666483257344 …

- After the interactive elements, participants heard first hand experience from Fiji on how increasing population movement due to climate change is affecting her country
- The first #DCdays session of the day is addressing #migration & displaced peoples: participants learning lessons from Fiji #COP22 https://twitter.com/pennyurquhart/status/797747739203432448 …

- So logical but often forgotten in the #migration debate: in principle people want to stay, not leave! Good remark by @UNmigration at #DCdays
- By 2085, even at warming of 1.5 degrees, 4 mln people will be in places where it's impossible physiologically to live - @UNmigration #DCdays
- #climatechange often a hidden factor inducing #migration, behind eg search for a job #DCdays #COP22 Follow @CAREClimate for upcoming report!
- Mariam Traore Chazalnoel @IOM_MECC: #climatemigration in dignity can contribute to #Adaptation and #sustainabledevelopment @COP22 #DCdays
- What are the dangers of making migrants of the most poor and vulnerable who migrate to survive? #DCdays @UNmigration
- There was a surprise during the following session on how climate and development practitioners can benefit from the inspiration, skills, methods and mindsets developed by applied improvisation

- During lunch, the Thomson Reuters Foundation took the opportunity to talk to former Irish president Mary Robinson about climate adaptation and, the big news of this year's UN climate talks, the election of Donald Trump as US President. Meanwhile, the collective communications staff continued to beaver away promoting key messages from D&C Days

- The afternoon parallel sessions saw participants choose between a focus on forest fire prevention and improved ovens and boilers in Morocco; the synergies between Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and how to mobilise private sector finance for adaptation, which is the focus of the coverage below:

- Some highlights from the other sessions happening at the same time
- #DCDays seeking strategies to break silos between NDCs, NAPs and SDGs #WRIClimate
- Challenging conventional community #adaptation conversations to include different private sector actors is a welcomed change at #DCdays
- The closing panel, moderated by Mary Robinson, brought together the three strands of discussions over the two days, highlighting the key messages and actions required to ensure that global ambition translates into local action and delivers climate resilience for all.
- Mary Robinson @ #DCDays: For good #communication, you need to be really, really clear - & get rid of all those acronyms nobody can remember!
- As part of the session, Robinson asked participants to think about three key words that reflected what they had seen and heard during D&C Days. There was no shortage of willing respondents
- The 2016 D&C Days closed with a moving poem by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, to her daughter
