National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans 2.0 workshop (Namibia)

In July 2014, the latest National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans 2.0 (NBSAPs) workshop took place at the Midgard Estate in Namibia to consider what successful mainstreaming of biodiversity and development would look like.

  1. Looking forward to Namibia NBSAP 2.0 workshop coming soon. Project countries doing well with revisions. Latest here:  http://www.iied.org/nbsaps-20-project-update
  2. On way to Namibia for #NBSAP meeting. Plane absolutely crammed. Looking forward to seeing project colleagues again. More over next few days.
  3. Our #NBSAP workshop will focus on what successful mainstreaming of biodiversity and development looks like.  http://iied.org/nbsaps
  4. Opening speeches: #NBSAP cornerstone of biodiversity conservation. Communications vital to citizens understanding its importance.
  5. Opening speeches 2: joined up work with initiatives under other environment conventions will contribute to biodiversity mainstreaming #NBSAP
  6. #NBSAP revision lessons learned so far: all sectors must own plan; cost plan for the long term; set clear indicators; get plan peer reviewed
  7. More lessons: make alliances; talk about benefits as well as costs; ownership across society, not only govt. Progress is being made #NBSAP
  8. Successful biodiversity mainstreaming: institutions not individuals; investment; focus on innovation (not threats); and eye on impact #NBSAP
  9. In Namibia working with govts of Seychelles, Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa andUganda on biodiversity mainstreaming #NBSAP
  10. #NBSAP Pinning down biodiversity mainstreaming success indicators turned out to be a challenge for finance, biodiversity and social sectors
  11. What are good indicators of successful biodiversity- development mainstreaming? Different ideas from different perspectives.
  12. Env ministries suggest more treasury allocations for biodiversity rather than donor reliance. Finance ministries view it differently #NBSAP
  13. @Darwin_Defra @IIED Yes that's right - NBSAPs 2.0 mainstreaming biodiversity and development project. Workshop first day going well.
  14. Workshop discussion highlights that a much more specific and targetted case needs to be made for biodiversity as a development asset #NBSAP
  15. Mainstreaming biodiversity not just one off task but continuing societal challenge - result from afternoon exercise at #NBSAP workshop
  16. Day 2 of biodiversity mainstreaming workshop and African countries are sharing lessons learned and guidance to pass to others #NBSAP
  17. #NBSAP How do finance people want biodiversity information? Figures, summarised and related to economic priorities. Long reports - no.
  18. @RosGoodrich @IIED True. They want it monetized and commodified (as if it could actually be).
  19. @JoshStack @IIED We are making distinction b/w biodiversity valuation as planning tool vs market tool + need to connect in orderto influence
  20. Comms for mainstreaming: fit message to audience priorities, use their language at start. Build relationship w more biodiversity info #NBSAP
  21. Focal points in different ministries can be a strength in mainstreaming. Meet regularly, and seize chance to join up thinking #NBSAP
  22. Valuing #biodiversity. Financial valuation just one way; must look at other values and include cost of practical impacts too #NBSAPs
  23. Valuing #biodiversity - who benefits and who bears cost of decisions? Value alternative uses for resource to inform better decisions #NBSAP
  24. 85%of CBD parties consider #biodiversity in nat priorities or devpt plans but often incidental + no budget - implementation issue again
  25. What makes good mainstreaming guidance? Specific, simple, covers whole process. Online/print - need both for different audiences #NBSAP
  26. Comms for mainstreaming: fit message to audience priorities, use their language at start. Build relationship w more biodiversity info #NBSAP
  27. One answer to accessible #biodiversity mainstreaming guidance is the  http://nbsapforum.net . Lots of info + languages. Take a look. #NBSAP
  28. OECD reports to biodiversity mainstreaming workshop that bilateral aid for biodiversity averages $6bn/year (5% total bilateral ODA) #NBSAP
  29. Third and last day of #NBSAP 2.0 workshop. Reviewing Botswana's draft this morning + looking ahead re biodiversity mainstreaming pland
  30. Impressive job done by Botswana on draft #NBSAP 2.0. Comments on exec summary (shorter), targets, tailored briefs for diff audiences etc
  31. Mainstreaming #biodiversity could use some video livestreaming. We would love to see #NBSAP workshop @IUCN_CEC @RosGoodrich @dilysroe
  32. @ronmader @IUCN_CEC @dilysroe good suggestion but not enough of us to do it all! W/shop report + interviews etc at  http://iied.org/nbsaps
  33. Please put this on a wishlist for future events. Livestreaming can help mainstreaming biodiversity! @RosGoodrich @IUCN_CEC @dilysroe #NBSAP
  34. Day 3 of workshop produces Statement to describe a vision for what mainstreaming can deliver - for biodiversity, society and economy #NBSAP
  35. So that's it from #NBSAP 2.0 mainstreaming biodiversity+devpt workshop in Midgard, Namibia. Productive, inspiring, lots of energy and plans
  36. SLIDESHARE: That might be all from the #NBSAP workshop in Namibia, but there are FOUR related presentations here -->  http://www.slideshare.net/IIEDslides/tag/nbsap
  37. The NBSAPS presentations mentioned in the above tweet were not from this Namibia workshop, but from earlier in the process.
