Engaging men and women in REDD+ business
During COP21, IIED held a two-day workshop focused on 'Engaging men and women in REDD+ business: effectively addressing the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation'. Below are some highlights from the event as it happened, plus follow-up information...
- IIED has been implementing REDD+ initiatives with the support of the governments of the UK and Norway since 2012. The workshop draws on findings from two projects. Firstly, 'Testing REDD+ in Mozambique', which includes research socioeconomic, biophysical and REDD+ delivery models, plus partners engaged in the implementation of interventions to reduce emissions. Secondly, 'Inclusive REDD+' looks at private sector engagement in closing the financing gap and addressing drivers of forest loss; and how men and women are integrated into actions to revert the current trends with a fair share of costs and benefits.
- In a blog written to preview the event, IIED senior researcher Isilda Nhantumbo discusses how the programme to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) can be made more effective, while also supporting local communities.
- REDD+ in Paris - what could be in it for people and forests? There are high expectations as to what the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) conference in Paris can deliver for the peoples of the world and for our planet. The ambition is for a universal and legally binding instrument that can put developed and developing countries on the same footing to address dangerous temperature rise.
- Our two-day event aimed to share the findings of this research to inform a wider debate on how REDD+ is contributing to addressing the drivers of land use and land use change, look at shared lessons from subnational and national level, and consider how to capitalise on the roles that different actors - including the private sector, men and women - play in the process.
- IIED senior researcher Isilda Nhantumbo opened the event by introducing the 'REDD+ and gender', 'Testing REDD+' and 'Private sector REDD+ research' focus, and outlined the objectives of the meeting and the expected outcomes.
- Keynote speaker Mirey Atallah from UNREDD set the scene by presenting successes and lessons learnt on REDD in the past eight years.

- Scaling up is fundamental to REDD+ effectiveness in reducing carbon emission while delivering on improved livelihoods and local economy development. The event fostered collective reflection on the challenges and innovative ways of addressing them in order to inform the wider REDD+ debate.
- As part of the 'Testing REDD+' project, the results of an IIED socioeconomic study were released at the workshop. These findings from the Beira Corridor, Mozambique, provide an important baseline against which progress can be measured.

- IIED consultant Arnela Mausse presented the methodology and findings from the socioeconomic baseline study on land use and land use change in Manica, Sofala and Zambezia, Mozambique.
- Amy Duchelle, a scientist at CIFOR, spoke about how the socioeconomic baseline and measuring the impact of REDD+.

- During sessions on 'Gender and equity in REDD+', challenges and ways forward to address the issue of leaving no one behind were discussed.
- Forest Action researcher Rahul Karki presented one of a series of national studies on REDD+ and gender. His presentation looked at the findings and policy implications in Nepal.
- Anthony Sangeda, lecturer at Sokoine University of Agriculture, presented the national REDD+ and gender findings from Tanzania.
