Unlocking climate finance for decentralised energy access
On the first day of the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP22) in Marrakesh, Morocco, Dutch NGO Hivos focused on 'Unlocking climate finance for decentralised energy access'. Among the panellists were IIED senior researcher Sarah Best. Here's what happened:
- Joining IIED's Sarah Best to discuss unlocking #climatefinance for decentralised #energyaccess is @JaneEbinger, director at @SE4ALL #COP22
- Sarah Best recently completed research showing that only a very small amount of international public climate finance goes toward to decentralised energy, preventing billions of people from having access to clean energy.
- Best: #climatefinance won't flow unless the national policy environment is favourable to investment. Shortage of proven biz. models #COP22
- The event went on to discuss opportunities to unlock climate finance for decentralised energy with improvements to international frameworks, developing national enabling environments, and earmarking money for decentralised solutions and lower income countries.
- @Powerhive's Chris Horner explains how data helped prove to financiers that African consumers are bankable, long-term propositions #COP22
- Best: Getting #climatefunds to small domestic companies, is crucial. Challenges inc language/knowledge/not small enough sums of money #COP22
- Statistics showing lack of funds flowing to decentralised #energyaccess are 'staggering & shocking' says @christian_aid rep at event #COP22
- Should there be earmarking of climate funds specifically for decentralised energy? One poss solution to encourage #energyaccess flows #COP22
- We need to change design features of climate funds & earmark #climatefinance to increase #energyaccess #COP22 @IIED
- An overriding message from the @hivosorg event on unlocking #climatefinance for decentralised #energyaccess at #COP22 https://twitter.com/hivosorg/status/795648097045151744 …
